Meditation Techniques

Rajyoga is not an escape from the desk. It is a way of returning to it with a mind that is quiet, rested and its own master.

Meditation Techniques

Why a finance professional needs a still mind

A balance sheet will forgive a slow decision. It will not forgive a clouded one. Yet the mind of a person who carries other people’s numbers is rarely quiet: a closing deadline, a client’s anxiety, a market that moved overnight. Thought follows thought until the thinker is exhausted by work that has not yet begun.

Rajyoga meditation, as it is practised in the Brahma Kumaris, begins from a simple recognition — I am a soul, a point of conscious light, and the body is what I am using, not what I am. That one step back is where stillness starts. The situation has not changed; the one facing it has.

How the practice actually goes

Rajyoga is done with the eyes open. There is no posture to master, no chanting, no withdrawal from the world. You sit as you are, let the gaze soften, and turn attention inward to the point of light behind the eyes. Then you connect that point with the Supreme Soul — the Ocean of Peace — and let what is there flow in.

A few minutes of this, taken two or three times in a working day, does more than an hour taken once. The wing calls these traffic control moments: a full stop, taken deliberately, before the next thing begins.

What changes at the desk

Clarity. Fewer thoughts, so the ones that remain are heard properly.

Decisions. Judgement made from calm rather than from pressure is judgement you can defend a year later.

Recovery. A mind that can be stilled at will does not carry the morning’s difficulty into the evening.

Steadiness. Others begin to bring their difficult conversations to you, because you do not add to the heat.

When the mind is still, the intellect is sharp. When the intellect is sharp, the decision is right.

Beginning

Start with three minutes in the morning, before the phone. Sit, straighten, soften the eyes, and hold one thought: I am a peaceful soul. Do not fight the other thoughts; let them pass like traffic you are not required to join. Do it again at midday and once before sleep.

Nothing is asked of you in return — no fee, no membership, no change of faith. The wing teaches Rajyoga freely, as the Brahma Kumaris has done since 1937.

The wing’s sessions are free and open to all.
