Self-Empowerment & Stress Management

Pressure is part of the profession. Being consumed by it is not. The difference is a self that has its own supply of strength.

Self-Empowerment & Stress Management

Where stress actually comes from

We speak of a stressful job, but the workload is only half of it. The other half is the running commentary the mind keeps up about the workload — what it will mean, who will judge it, what happens if it slips. Two people carry the same file; one sleeps, the other does not.

Brahma Kumaris teaching puts it plainly: stress is not created by the event but by the response, and the response belongs to us. That is not a comfortable idea, because it removes the excuse. It is also the only idea that gives any power back.

The soul’s original qualities

The practice holds that every soul carries seven original qualities — peace, purity, love, bliss, knowledge, happiness and power. They are not acquired; they are recovered. Meditation is the returning to them, and self-empowerment is the habit of drawing on them on purpose, before the day empties you rather than after.

I am a master of my mind, not a servant of my moods.

Four practices that hold under pressure

Traffic control. One minute of stillness on the hour. Not to relax — to interrupt the momentum.

Check and change. Notice the thought before it becomes the mood. A thought caught early costs nothing to drop.

The morning fill. Whatever you fill the mind with at dawn is what it will spend all day. Fill it deliberately.

Good wishes. Hold a good wish for the difficult colleague. It changes the meeting more reliably than preparation does.

Resilience is not endurance

Endurance is holding on until something breaks. Resilience is not being emptied in the first place. The person who takes five minutes at nine, one minute at eleven, five at two, arrives at the evening with something still in reserve — for the family, who usually receive whatever the office left behind.

This is what the wing means by self-empowerment: not becoming harder, but staying full.

The wing’s sessions are free and open to all.
